New Family Troop Option

Family Troop Option for Scouts BSA

In response to a growing need among Scouting families, the Scouting America National Executive Board has approved a Family Troop option for Scouts BSA following a successful pilot period. This new option allows boys and girls to participate together in the same troop and will be available beginning December 15, 2025.

What Is a Family Troop?

The Family Troop option provides chartered organizations with greater flexibility in how they deliver the Scouting program. It is designed to meet the needs of communities and families who prefer to experience Scouting together within a single unit. Beginning December 15, 2025, chartered organizations have three troop options:

  • Boy Troops

  • Girl Troops

  • Family Troops

Why Family Troops?

This decision follows a successful national co-ed troop pilot and directly reflects feedback from families and units, particularly in communities where there are not enough youth to sustain separate boy and girl troops. Results from the pilot demonstrated clear benefits:

  • Membership growth

  • Stronger program delivery

  • High satisfaction among youth, leaders, and families

  • More efficient use of unit resources
